New Movement, Reduced Thickness, Increased Water Resistance: Panerai's Luminor Marina Gets an Upgrade
A Panerai staple, the Luminor Marina is beloved by watch enthusiasts for its iconic case shape, classic bridge design, powerful luminescence, and practical performance. The name "Luminor" derives from luminous technology from the 1960s, and the brand adopted it as the name of the watch series to emphasize its uniqueness. Modern Luminor watches have evolved while maintaining their core design while continuously innovating. This year, Panerai's focus is on the Luminor series.
In 2025, the Luminor Marina series introduced several new models. These models feature 44mm cases, returning to the larger size of earlier models in the series, and are available in a variety of dial and strap colors. Notably, these new Luminor models are more than just a case change; they feature the debut of the P.980 caliber, a transparent caseback, and increased water resistance to 500 meters. Furthermore, thanks to the slimmer nature of the new movement, the case thickness has also been reduced, providing a more comfortable wearing experience. Let's take a look at each one below.
First, the most significant upgrade is the improved water resistance. Previous Lumino MARINA models were mostly water-resistant to 300 meters. The new model, with its transparent caseback, boasts an exceptional 500-meter water resistance, putting it on par with professional dive fake luxury watches.
We understand that there's a trade-off between high-depth water resistance and comfortable wearing. Performance considerations often compromise thickness when trying to achieve deep water resistance. Consequently, most high-depth water-resistance watches on the market struggle to maintain a comfortable fit. While the new Lumino MARINA improves water resistance, the case thickness has been reduced: from 15.65 mm to 13.7 mm, a reduction of approximately 12%. The weight has also been reduced by approximately 15%, resulting in a more comfortable wearing experience.
Another upgrade to the new Lumino MARINA is the movement. The transparent caseback reveals the debut of the P.980 caliber. This movement features a 28,800vph frequency, Incabloc shock absorbers, 23 jewels, a 3-day (72-hour) power reserve, and a stop-seconds function. Furthermore, the P.980 caliber boasts a slim profile, measuring just 4.2mm thick according to the official website.
Clear and bright luminescence is a key characteristic of the Luminor collection. As mentioned earlier, the name "Lumor" derives from early luminous technology. Although modern Panerai watches utilize safe, non-radioactive luminescence, the collection name has been retained for historical purposes. A subtle upgrade to the 2025 Luminor Marina is the use of Super-LumiNova® X2 luminous technology. This marks the first time Panerai has incorporated this technology into a core collection. Compared to the first generation of Super-LumiNova®, Super-LumiNova® X2 offers even higher brightness. high quality fake watches
The new Luminor Marina also incorporates a Click Release system for the strap. A quick-release button can be seen on the back of the watch strap, allowing the wearer to easily remove the strap without tools. This enriches the watch's appearance and offers a wide range of possibilities. Pairing a wide variety of straps is a major joy for Panerai watchmakers.
An often overlooked detail is that Panerai uses AISI 316LVM stainless steel in this new watch. This material undergoes a vacuum arc refinement process. Compared to the conventional 316L stainless steel most commonly used in mainstream watches, it offers superior scratch and corrosion resistance.
As we all know, the classic Luminor series features manual-winding movements. Since the advent of the automatic-winding era, many models have featured the word "AUTOMATIC" on their dials to emphasize this new feature. This year, the brand has removed the "AUTOMATIC" designation for a simpler design, paying homage to the aesthetics of earlier models in the series.
It features a P.980 movement with a stop-seconds function, 500-meter water resistance and a transparent caseback, brighter Super-LumiNova X2, a quick-release strap, and a slimmer case. With all these new features, it's a truly impressive upgrade. Vacheron Constantin replica watches
