MOGADISHU Lawrence Taylor Jersey , July 30 (Xinhua) -- At least five people were killed and scores of others injured in a bomb explosion outside a police station in Mogadishu's city centre on Sunday, police said.


A police officer told Xinhua that a vehicle loaded with explosives blew up in the middle of road as traffic build up along Maka Al Mukarama road.


"The vehicle exploded in the midst of traffic along Maka al Mukarama road killing five people and injuring several others Darian Thompson Jersey ," said Yahye Mohamed.


The victims were largely civilian who were using the road.


Pictures from the scene show that the exploded vehicle was engulfed by fire. Witnesses told Xinhua that the explosion destroyed vehicles on the road and killed people.


"The explosion was so huge. You can see the smoke covering the whole place. Several people have died and others injured," Muhidin Farah Wayne Gallman Jersey , a trader, told Xinhua.


It is not clear if the target was the police station located just directly opposite to the scene of the explosion.


The explosion comes as security forces have in the last months intensified traffic checks and operations in Mogadishu.


It is the first explosion in the city in more than a month since the deadly Ramadan period attack at two restaurants which claimed at least 30 lives.


No group has claimed responsibility but the militant group Al-Shabaab has claimed credit for such attacks in the past.
