He leads the team with 31 catches for 331 yards, a 10.7 yard average. The only thing absent from his statistics is the touchdowns, and there is a good reason for that.Opposing teams are doubling him more often than not, and they are playing a lot of two-deep zone to prevent him from going deep.That’s what Panthers coach Ron Rivera saw when he watched film of the Giants’ offense.“I do see where people most certainly are paying attention to where Odell Beckham is lined up, that’s for dog-gone sure,” Rivera said. “That makes a lot of sense to me.”The Giants also have been without tight end Evan Engram since he sprained a knee in Week 3 at Houston. He helps open things up for the other receivers.Beckham said in a recent game the Giants got into the red zone and set up for a passing play. We just have to find ways to get around that.”The Giants have struggled to score points. They have been held to 15, 13 and 18 in losses to the Jaguars, Cowboys and Saints. They beat Houston 27-22 in their best game offensive, although they were held to seven points in the second half.What’s been missing has been the big play. New York has nine passes of 20 or more yards and only two at 30 or better.Beckham’s long was a 30-yarder against Houston. The running game is similar. The Giants have nine runs of 20 or more yards, with Saquon Barkley having eight of them, the long being a 68-yarder against Jacksonville. It’s the only run over 30 yards.Offensive coordinator Mike Shula, who was the Panthers coordinator last season, said the Giants aren’t going to start forcing passes to Beckham, who had 38 touchdown catches in his first four seasons, the last being a four-game run.“I think he’s very talented,” Shula said of Beckham. “He’s going to get the ball. He’s going to get us in the end zone. He’s going to get in the end zone. More importantly, we need to score more, however we do it. Whether or not it’s Odell, or Saquon, whoever it is. We just need to get down there number one, and finish drives.”Beckham said the offense has just made too many mistakes. They move the chains on drives and then allow a sack or commit a penalty that puts them in second or third-and-long. It’s a no-win situation.In the three losses, the Giants have gotten into the red zone six times, scoring three touchdowns. Engram has a propensity of dropping passes, especially in clutch situations.Engram caught 64 passes for 722 yards and six touchdowns last season. Engram also dropped 11 passes and vowed in the offseason to work on rectifying that problem.Now, in his second season, Engram has caught 17 passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns, but he has also dropped three passes.“It’s pretty tough,” Engram said Thursday before the team practiced in preparation for facing the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night.“It’s not where I want to be. I have to put some of these plays behind me and keep working on getting better and staying positive.”Engram’s problems are also magnified because the Giants have a 1-7 record for the second straight season.“We just have to go out and get a win,” Engram said. “We have to get some of the bad tastes out of our mouths. It’s going to feel good to get out there on the big stage Monday night.”The Giants are coming off their bye week, which should make the beleaguered team feel a little better.“I think it’s important to put the bad things behind me,” Engram said. “A couple of those drops are catches that I can make in my sleep. I just want to go out there and give us enough an opportunity to win the game Monday night.”Engram was the first rookie tight end to lead the Giants in receptions. His six touchdown catches were a franchise record for a rookie tight end in 2017.So the potential is there. He just has to make sure to hold on to the ball, something that coach Pat Shurmur also realizes.“Evan is a pass-catching tight end,” Shurmur said. “I think we all realize that. But it’s important that he catches the ball. He’s had a couple of drops. But he works at it. He has worked all along at catching the ball. He does a lot of drills, a lot of extra work. He works hard at catching the ball. He always puts the drop behind him and continues to work hard at trying to catch the ball.”Quarterback Eli Manning recognizes Engram’s passion for improving.“Evan works hard and wants to do everything right,” said Manning, who will remain the team’s starter for the time being. “He puts in a lot of work. He was a starter on a team that won more than 10 games last year.
